Histroy of trailers!
Film trailers date back to 1913 where Nils Granlund the advertising manager for the musical ‘The Pleasure Seekers’ a theatrical performance at the winter gardens, used a trailer to attract viewers, however they became more popular in the 30’swhen huge film makers Walt Disney used a cartoon trailer in the build up to their production of snow white, another huge film of the 30’s also used a trailer to attract viewers “gone with the wind”, the trailers in these early years where mainly voice overs from a man with an enthusiastic voice telling the audience how good that film is. However film trailers progressed steadily and stated showing more of the film clips with a general non diegetic sound over the actual scene, and tend to use fast jump cuts just like the “Dr Strangelove” film trailer of the 1960’s which showed a variety of clips from the film and writing, this formed the basis of new trailers such as the new harry potter and the deathly hallows part 2 trailer which features many scenes and music over them with some diegetic speaking clips from Harry and Ron for example.
