The marketing campaign for the movie ‘Hellboy’ was based around a few forms of marketing posters, trailers and the internet the posters had a series of different posters so that fans could have something to look forward to other than the screening of the film, the trailers where in installments as well all being different.
Posters
The first time ‘hell boy 2’ was seen anywhere was the release of it at the 2007 comic-con, it was released but didn’t too much away and only shown the title of the film, this was to get the audiences interested and make them want to find out more, the poster was a piece of art from magnolia that showed ‘Hellboy’ in his comic form, the poster was created so that fans would go wild when they saw it. After the posters of all the characters where shown to the fans of ‘Hellboy’ the first names of the start studded cast where revealed over a number of weeks to keep the excitement up among fans, the posters where good incites to the film as every characters poster tried to show the audience one of their powers in some way.
Trailers
The trailers where also set out untraditionally, they were shown in a way that each different trailer showed a different aspect about the film, such as the first trailer being mainly a teaser trailer, fans of the first ‘Hellboy’ would of known what the trailer was for as it shown some footage that is traditional of ‘Hellboy’. The second trailer was based purely on the plot of the bad guy in the film, it shows some of his motives and some of what is going to happen, it shows the bad guy entering the human world and starting trouble, it also shows a bit of ‘Hellboy’ in a fighting scene, they do this so that fans get to see what is going to happen but they won’t know the outcome unless they go and watch the film, it will also intrigue them into watching the other trailers and this marketing technique will make fans want the film. The last film trailer is more like a traditional film trailer that you would expect to see with and introduction at the start and an exciting middle with a cliff hanging end, this was a good marketing strategy as it gave fans three bits of footage to be excited about and to think about so they could make their judgement on whether they are going to watch the film, also if they didn’t like one film trailer the fans can see the others and place their opinion on the film again.
The internet
There were many advertisements over the internet and unlike the actual trailers and posters the director Guillermo Del Toro’s name was all over the internet advertisement, this is so that people who are fans of his films will see his name and may be interested in seeing the film.

Film synergy - Trailer/cover/poster
In the three pieces of media that I have selected based on the film ‘ Sherlock Holmes’ I will try and look at the synergy between all three and how this is represented in all three forms of the media. Synergy is when on form of media such as a film in this case ‘Sherlock Holmes’ produces a film trailer trying to promote their film and attracting an audience to watch the film, the film company will also produce a film poster and have a well known film magazine to advertise their film via having a whole front page spread with the films main character on it such as the ‘total film’ magazine with ‘Sherlock Holmes on the front of it, they create the synergy by having the character in the same outfit in all three forms of media, ‘Sherlock Holmes’ is wearing the same old fashioned suit on the front of the magazine, poster and also in the film trailer, they make out that ‘Sherlock’ is the main guy in all forms of the media as he is centre of the page on both poster and magazine he is also in nearly every single scene in the film trailer. The film company creates synergy like this so that people from all types of backgrounds can see that the film is being produced and that it will be in the cinema very soon, they do it so that people will be in the know and will go and watch the film when it is out. They make three forms of media so that they can place the film anywhere, such as a paper or billboard or even the television.

Media regulation
Everyone who watches listens to or reads the news is reliant on the media on the media, this is something that we have had to do since the start of media, however the government don’t like the freedom of the media as they don’t wish any bad/critical words being spread, but article 19 stops them from controlling or stopping anything the media says, through freedom of speech, however regulations are put in place so that the public interest is preserved.
the media regulation office or OFCOM and Article 19 as it is known have had to reconsider some of their regulations in recent times due to some content that has been aired and complaints that have come in from the public about some programmes on the television and radio as well as news paper articles, such incidents like the Jonathon Ross and Russell Brand fiasco where they rang Andrew Sachs and it was aired on television where they made what some people believed to be inappropriate comments about his granddaughter, it was reviewed and both Jonathan and Russell faced sanctions including the sacking of Russell and the suspension of Jonathan, all this was done in the interest of the public as they believed it not acceptable and believed it in the best interest to take action.
There are 3 main areas when it comes to media regulation Political, Economic and Social and these aspects are key, the political side is all about should the government regulate the media, this would be bad as the government could keep important matters away from the public that may concern them, also it is so the government cannot enhance their position and increase their popularity not allowing opposition parties news in the media. Economically the regulations are put in place so huge companies such as coca-cola for example cannot put huge advertisements on the television or news articles or on radio that would jeopardise the interests for small businesses, if they can’t get their advertisements in the media, if it wasn’t regulated it would mean that the huge international companies would be the only ones in business. Socially it is important media is regulated as people need to know what is going on people need to know what is happening in the world as this may affect their life choices, such as moving abroad for example or even going on holiday, the media plays a huge part of our life, we are surrounded by it constantly and if it wasn’t regulated the government and the media could tell us anything, even if it was true or not!

analysis of two movie poster!
In this Empire film magazine the characters of the popular harry potter film are dressed in their ordinary clothes, this appeals to me as it is basically saying that in the magazine you will be reading about them personally and not all about the film itself, in the other empire magazine front cover they are dressed up as their characters, this is also a good front cover as the harry potter fan base will want to buy the magazine purely because they love harry potter. However I believe that the plain clothed magazine is much better as I just feel that the different appearance would make people attracted to it. There are no pugs or major puns or headlines on the magazine which I find very clever as it is very brave and unique decision for the magazine to have came up with as they are expecting their readers to already know who they are, in contrast the second empire magazine gives many pugs and a headline to show who they are and what they are going to be writing about in their magazine, they have the pug of “FREE” “spectacular potter photo special” this is to attract fans, this is a very good way of getting readers to buy the magazine, it is also clever as they aren’t actually giving anything away they are just saying it as the pictures would of been in the magazine anyway, they are saying free pictures as they expect their readers to rip the pages out and have them as a picture. The characters are in front of the title of the magazine this shows that the characters are the main anchorage taking up the centre of the magazine, if you had never seen the film before you could tell who the main character was as “harry” is standing in the middle with the other two characters standing either side of him. There is a Golden banner running through the middle of the magazine, this is also a way of getting the attention of readers as it say “free collector’s portfolio the complete cast come together for our BIGGEST EVER EXCLUSIVE” this will appeal to any Harry potter fans and collector’s wishing to read about their favourite film and characters. It also has a puff in a black circle saying “the exclusive the world wanted” this is a clever selling technique as the magazine is basically saying to readers they have provided a great opportunity and a great article for them to read, saying that the magazine is looking after the interests of their readers. It also has other puffs saying “PLUS” and other articles that are inside showing that the magazine isn’t all about Harry Potter.
Codes and conventions of a film trailer!
Codes and conventions of a film trailer!
Most film trailers are the same following the same structure as many before them, such the structure in a horror film follows the pattern of everything seeming great with jolly music, and the sudden change often represents the turning point the point where the film becomes scary/horrific, however in some trailers you don’t really see much of the films content these are called “teaser” trailers basically because it doesn’t show you anything and makes you wonder what the film is about.
The trailer will attract the audience and hope that they will go and watch the full film when it is released, they do this by little hints to the film’s content, showing key moments, without giving to much away, all the scenes shown in a film trailer are carefully selected and edited in a way that makes you want to see the film. Film trailers will often show off the cast that are appearing in the film this may draw the audience in especially if their favourite actor/actress is staring in the film.
These are what you would normally find in a trailer;
• The trailer will need to set the tone of what genre the film is almost immediately
• It should give a clue/hint of a theme or a storyline
• It has to reach out to an audience and get their interest
• Should show the main stars of the film as in many cases some people may watch purely to see their favourite actor/actress
• Usually made up of very fast shots so that you don’t get to much content
• Always shows the title and a release date
• Often you will have a voice over and a film trailer will always have music playing over it or it will have some in the background.
